We’re upgrading the network of pipes under Royal Parade so that we can continue to deliver reliable water services to the community.
About the project
The Royal Parade water main has provided Parkville and Melbourne’s CBD with safe and reliable water services since 1889.
After more than 130 years of ongoing use the water main is due for an upgrade. We will replace the existing water main with 2km of new pipeline between Princes Park and Genetics Lane.

VOICE OVER: Since 1889, the Royal Parade water main has provided the Parkville community with safe and reliable water services. That’s 130 years of ongoing use.
So for today’s residents, and for future generations, we’re upgrading Melbourne’s water network.
It’s all a part of our commitment to provide you with reliable water services for now and for another 130 years.
The Royal Parade water main upgrade project will replace the existing water main with two kilometres of new pipeline.
Construction will begin in May 2023 and will be completed by late 2023.
We know that Royal Parade is an essential road for Parkville.
As we upgrade the water main, the way you use this road will temporarily change.
We will let you know when there will be disruptions so you can plan and allow extra time to get to your destination.
We’re working with residents, local businesses, transport operators and the City of Melbourne to minimise the impact of the project on the Parkville community.
This essential project will ensure the reliability of the city’s water network for generations to come.
We’re proud to be doing our part to support the growth of the Parkville community.

We will use a slip-lining method for this project. This method inserts the new pipeline inside the existing water main. Slip-lining is safer, quicker and more cost-effective than other methods.
Construction will start in May 2023 and will be completed by the end of 2023.
What to expect during the project
During the works traffic, cyclist and pedestrian access to Royal Parade will temporarily change.
We will close sections of the service lane to keep everyone safe. This means traffic will be diverted and there will be fewer car parks available along the service lane.
Bicycles will be rerouted off the road and on to the footpath. Footpaths will remain open and will become shared paths in some areas.
Buses and trams will continue to run along Royal Parade during the works. To find out more about bus stop location changes visit Public Transport Victoria’s website or call 1800 800 007.
We will work with the local council, transport companies, cyclist groups and the community to minimise disruptions.
