We’re building a new sewer in Docklands so we can continue to deliver safe and reliable sewerage services to Melbourne’s growing population. The project is the final stage of a four-stage upgrade to the Melbourne sewer network.
Project Overview
We’re building 744 metres of new sewer pipes under Melbourne’s Docklands, to double the capacity of the sewer.
The new pipeline will be installed under Flinders Lane, Spencer Street, Siddeley Street and Wurundjeri Way.
The project marks the fourth and final stage of our CBD sewer upgrade, a $160 million enhancement of Melbourne’s sewerage network.
As part of the major upgrade, construction is complete on new sewers in Spencer Street, Lonsdale Street and Elizabeth Street.
Why the project is needed
Melbourne’s sewer network was built in the late 1800s. It has serviced the area for more than 120 years and is still working today.
As the city’s population continues to grow, we’re increasing the capacity of our sewer system, to ensure a safe and reliable sewerage service to Melbourne’s CBD now and in the future.
Benefits for the region
The project benefits include:
Increasing the capacity of the sewer network so we can service the area as the population grows.
Building long term reliability of sewer services for CBD residents, workers and visitors.
Local impacts
We’re committed to letting local communities know about our works. If you live in the area, we’ll contact you with more information. As the project continues, we’ll keep you updated.
We’ll make every effort to minimise impacts where we can. We’re using tunnelling methods to build the new sewer to reduce impacts on local roads, businesses and residents for example.
Here’s what you can expect:
Increased construction traffic, trucks and machinery in the area.
Changes to traffic conditions, including lane closures and detours.
Works during the day and at night.
Noise from construction machinery.
Storage of equipment in the area, and on-site facilities to support workers.
Temporary fencing and barriers around our worksite.
Environmental care, community and cultural heritage
To ensure the best outcomes for local communities during this project, we will:
Consult with residents and businesses to ensure we understand their needs.
Consult with organisations like council, public transport companies and utility providers to minimise impacts to local services.
Provide regular updates to other authorities and the community.
Work with Heritage Victoria to ensure the protection of heritage sites.
Ensure respect for First Nations heritage through a cultural heritage management plan.
