Thriving Communities grants fund community-led activities that promote sustainable water use, care for Country and the environment, and community cohesion.
You can apply for up to $5,000 or up to $20,000, depending on your project.

Applications open on 18 March 2026 and must be submitted by 22 April 2026.

Selection criteria
Meet at least two:
The project supports the community to thrive by supporting or improving equity, opportunity and inclusivity
The project demonstrates a community need
The project is locally led and supports GWW’s diverse community to succeed.
We will also assess your organisation’s capacity to deliver, including your track record, budget, risk and delivery schedule.

The kinds of projects we will fund
Projects that:
Provide opportunities for the community to gather and celebrate, such as local community festivals
Are led by our diverse communities, including First Nations and culturally and linguistically diverse communities
Support the sustainable use of water, increase tree canopy and green open spaces, such as tree plantings.
Note these are examples only. We will consider a range of projects that meet the selection criteria.
Projects that:
Provide access to learning and career opportunities in the water sector, for example, mentoring programs
Help local industry to thrive, such as research projects and agricultural initiatives
Partner with our diverse communities, including First Nations and culturally and linguistically diverse communities
Support the sustainable use of water, including increased tree canopy, revegetation and habitat restoration.

Funds can be used for:
program coordination and facilitation
purchase of materials for events and activities
marketing materials
skills development, training and workshops
venue hire, including furniture hire or purchase
project evaluation.

Funds cannot be used for:
capital works or improvements (major improvements to fixed assets, buildings or grounds)
scholarships, donations or prize money
emergency relief or disaster appeals
high-risk events or activities that are damaging or harmful to people or the environment, including activities that would alter water flows, for example locating a pool in a creek
alcohol, drug or tobacco use (as a primary activity)
activities that primarily benefit an individual
activities aligned to political, religious, gambling, weaponry or military pursuits
projects undertaken for commercial gain or benefit
funding for a permit application or planning permit.

are based in GWW’s service area
are an incorporated or registered not-for-profit organisation or can prove an auspice arrangement with an appropriate organisation
have an Australian Business Number (ABN) and Australian bank account
have public liability insurance (PLI)
operate in GWW’s service area
are an incorporated or registered not-for-profit community organisation, or can prove an auspice arrangement with an appropriate organisation
have an Australian Business Number (ABN) and Australian bank account
have the required insurances, such as professional indemnity and/or public liability insurance
You can not apply if:
you are a GWW employee or supplier
the project or initiative has already been delivered or commenced
your project or event has already received funding for three consecutive years
you have not met previous obligations to GWW on grant and project reporting.
