Our product and industry standards help make sure our water and sewerage network is safe, reliable and built to last. Here's what you need to know.
Find an approved product
GWW requires products and materials to be approved for use. Only GWW approved products and materials can be used for linear assets such as pipelines, valves, water meters and associated fittings and other infrastructure works in our service area.
Note: All GWW approved electrical, instrumentation and control items are included in the PEL (Preferred Equipment List) that is included in GWW Technical Standard for Electrical, Instrumentation and Control and this can be obtained by emailing us or via your GWW Project Manager.
If are seeking to use a product that is not in our approved list, you need to apply for a dispensation, please lodge a Design dispensation request form or contact your GWW Project Manager.
Search the Melbourne Retail Water Agencies portal for GWW approved products and materials or email us to discuss alternative products.

If you a supplier or manufacturer wanting to add a product to our approved list, please complete this application form on the MRWA Web Portal and email us.
Find applicable industry standards
All network assets must comply with industry standards adopted by the MRWA. These standards include Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA) codes, standard drawings, calculation tools and specifications.
Search the MRWA website for industry standards relating to:
- water supply pipelines
- sewerage pipelines
- pressure sewerage networks
- vacuum sewerage networks
- sewage pump station standards.
GWW Supplementary Standards
GWW has additional supplementary standards to the MRWA standards and WSAA Codes, with specific requirements for work done in our service area. These requirements take precedence over the MRWA standards and WSAA Codes.
GWW Standards
In addition to MRWA standards and supplements, GWW has its own standards which set out the engineering requirements for different asset classes. These standards cover water storage tanks, electrical, SCADA, etc. In addition to standards, GWW has a list of specifications and guidelines that should also be followed by consultants and contractors working on GWW projects. These standards and guidelines/specifications can be obtained from GWW upon request by emailing us or contacting your GWW Project Manager.
Design dispensations
You need to get a dispensation if you are not following our standards or MRWA standards and specifications. You need to submit a dispensation request for approval before you submit a design verification. To apply for a dispensation complete the design dispensation form.
