If you're a commercial food business that produces waste water, you'll need a trade waste consent.
Who needs to hold a trade waste consent?
If your business is involved in food production or preparation, you will need to hold a trade waste consent with us. This includes:
bakeries
retail butchers and delicatessens
restaurants, cafeterias and canteens
schools
cafes
function centres
supermarkets
fast-food and takeaway shops
caterers
ice-cream shops
commercial kitchens.
These businesses may also need to have a grease trap installed.
Why do you need a trade waste consent?
Wastewater from food preparation, cooking and cleaning contains fats, oils and other solid particles (greasy waste). If not managed appropriately, this can cause sewer blockages on your property and within our sewerage system.
Apply
Trade waste consent
When you apply for a trade waste consent, we'll ask you to provide some important details about your business. This information may include:
your company details, trading hours and the location of the site from where trade waste will be discharged
the types and quantity of waste generated
proposed treatment systems and site layout
trade waste management, treatment devices and monitoring equipment
We'll negotiate the terms of your trade waste consent as part of the trade waste application process.
It can take up to 10 working days to process your application. If you have a question about your application, email trade.waste@gww.com.au or call us on 13 44 99.
A trade waste owner’s consent allows you to keep a disused grease trap sewer connection on your property.
When a tenant vacates a property but a grease trap remains connected, it is a potential risk to GWW's sewerage systems. While the grease trap remains connected, it will be necessary for you to hold a trade waste owner’s consent with us.
The owner is responsible for the connection until:
a future tenant wants to use the connection
or the grease trap is disconnected from the sewer and decommissioned. Evidence of the disconnection must be provided to GWW.
When we prepare or renew a trade waste consent, you will be charged a one-off application processing fee, based on the complexity and risk of your site. There are also management fees and volume and quality charges for the collection, transport and treatment of your waste water.
To cancel your trade waste consent, you will need to contact one of our consultants by emailing trade.waste@gww.com.au. You can also visit our page on grease traps to find out how to permanently disconnect your grease trap from the sewer.
