The upgrade is a positive step in ensuring continued safe, reliable and high-quality drinking water for local residents.
Project overview
The successful completion of the Pentland Hills Water Infrastructure Upgrade is a positive step in ensuring continued safe, reliable and high-quality drinking water services for local residents.
The project is vital for supporting the needs of the Pentland Hills community by strengthening essential water infrastructure and improving service reliability.
The works involved constructing a new water tank, pump station and approximately 600 metres of underground water main, including a section installed beneath the Western Freeway.
Located on Mortons Road, the new infrastructure replaces the ageing Wilkies and Dicksons tanks and associated pump station, which have been in operation since 1972 and were located on nearby private properties.
JAYDO delivered this project on behalf of Greater Western Water (GWW), the project demonstrates continued investment in modern infrastructure to support Melbourne’s growing west.
Early works commenced in June 2025, with major construction beginning in August 2025 and completed in June 2026.
Thank you to our local stakeholders, residents, landowners and delivery partners for your cooperation and support throughout the project, including during meter relocations and site access arrangements.
Why the project was needed
The existing Wilkies and Dicksons tanks were more than 50 years old and at the end of their asset life, requiring significant renewal to maintain service levels. Located within private farm properties without formal access arrangements, the infrastructure presented ongoing operational, safety and maintenance challenges for GWW staff and contractors.
The location of the tanks in paddocks with livestock also increased the risk of contamination, while reliance on manual operations created inefficiencies and additional safety risks.
To address these challenges and improve water quality outcomes, new, accessible and modern infrastructure was required.
Benefits for Pentland Hills
The project benefits include:
improved reliability and quality of drinking water supply for local residents
improved water pressure and network performance
reduced risk of water quality issues through better control of disinfection
safer and more efficient access for maintenance, testing and operations
removal of the need to access infrastructure on private property
renewal of ageing assets to support long-term community needs
