The Platypus Watch Project: Phase 2 continues and expands a highly successful 2024-25 citizen science program that was funded by GWW and delivered in full by the Werribee River Association (WRA) in partnership with Victoria University. Phase 1 demonstrated the strong community appetite, scientific rigour, and operational capacity needed to make this project work. Phase 2 builds directly on those foundations, expanding water quality monitoring to 8 testing sessions and introducing 3 dedicated water quality workshops, while deepening community participation and producing lasting legacy resources for the Wyndham region.
Working with the same experienced research team and established citizen science community, WRA will continue monthly water quality monitoring and macroinvertebrate assessment at two river sites. The expanded program of workshops deepens scientific literacy and practical skills across the Wyndham community, while the growing dataset strengthens the evidence base needed to protect the Werribee River's declining platypus population and advocate for lasting improvements to waterway health.
