Greater Western Water commences upgrade of century-old water main on Royal Parade

One of Melbourne’s oldest water mains will get an essential upgrade this month with construction commencing on a two-kilometre section of the Royal Parade water main in Parkville.
Greater Western Water’s (GWW) General Manager Growth and Infrastructure, Amanda Smith said the existing water main was built in 1889 and was in need of an upgrade to maintain a safe and reliable service for the community.
“The water main is a critical asset and has serviced Parkville and Melbourne CBD customers for more than a century. Its size and location, proximity to essential services such as hospitals and current condition make it a high priority for upgrade.
“The new water main will reduce future disruption of the water network and will improve the reliability of the water supply now and into the future,” she said.
The works will take place in stages along the eastern service lane between Genetics Lane to the corner of Holtom Street West and Bowen Crescent in Carlton North. Ms Smith said GWW were mindful of other construction projects in Parkville and were committed to minimising the disruption for residents, commuters and traders.
“To reduce the impact of construction we’re working closely with our partners and stakeholders and will be providing advance notice to the community as the works progress.
“The use of slip-lining technology in the delivery of construction will also help to reduce disruption and project duration,” she said.
Works will be delivered by Fulton Hogan and will create 10 new jobs. The Royal Parade water main renewal is scheduled to be completed in late September 2023.
