UV light adds extra layer of protection for Lancefield

Local residents are set to benefit from enhanced water treatment following the completion of a new ultraviolet (UV) disinfection unit in Lancefield.
Powerful UV light adds another layer of protection, removing potentially harmful microorganisms as part of the water disinfection treatment process.
GWW's General Manager of Growth and Infrastructure, Ian Burton said the UV disinfection technology delivers an important enhancement to water quality standards.
"UV disinfection adds an extra layer of protection to our treatment process for Lancefield’s water supply, which already met strict quality guidelines,” he said.
"UV disinfection is a chemical-free process that effectively eliminates pathogens in water and targets specific bacteria that can be found in open catchments," he said.
The new UV units in Lancefield
Chosen for its effectiveness and minimal environmental impact, the UV disinfection unit operates inside a metal cylinder, housing long fluorescent UV tubes that treat the water as it passes through the system. "The system also has a compact footprint, requiring less infrastructure than other options, making it the best choice from an environmental perspective." Mr Burton continued.
"This upgrade reinforces our commitment to delivering safe and high-quality drinking water tailored to the specific requirements of our various supply systems."
Lancefield’s drinking water is treated through a multi-stage process. Water flows from the dissolved air flotation (DAFF) storage plant, through the new UV system, then into chlorination for additional treatment, before being stored in water tanks and distributed to the town.
The six-month project presented unique logistical challenges, with specialised UV units sourced from Germany and the protective shed requiring a specialised coating applied in Japan to protect the infrastructure and ensure long-term durability.
The UV disinfection process will not alter the water's taste or smell.
This upgrade follows the successful completion of a similar UV installation at Myrniong Water Filtration Plant, as part of a broader program of water quality improvements across the region.
