For Field Maintenance Services Manager Richard, adaptability is part of delivering essential services to the community.
“I can have the whole day planned out, and then it gets pushed aside because of the unpredictable nature of the job.”
He recently marked 20 years with the organisation, leading field maintenance depot teams across Brooklyn, Melton and Sanctuary Lakes, supporting around 35 people and working closely with teams across the organisation to keep essential services running.
Starting as Gisborne Depot Team Leader, he has progressed into his current role, with a consistent focus on people, customers and community.
“Any success comes down to the great people around me,” he says. “I share my passion for customers and community, quality work, and building strong teams.”
That focus shapes how he approaches the job.
“It’s not about ticking a box. It’s about achieving outcomes our customers and community can benefit from. Improving the network, developing our people, and continuing to evolve how we work.”
One of the biggest changes in recent years has been moving to an in-house field maintenance model across the whole service area.
“It’s been challenging and rewarding at the same time,” he says. “But we are already seeing the benefits, and there is a lot more to come.”
Despite the scale of the role, it is the people that stand out.
“My favourite part of the job is working with my staff and the good people across the business.”
One moment that has stayed with him is helping honour a former colleague.
“He was incredibly loyal and dedicated,” he says. “Before he passed, we worked to have a reservoir named after him, Graham Brock Reservoir. That meant a lot.”
He says the relationships built along the way have been a highlight.
“I’ve been really privileged to build lifelong friendships in this industry.”
Recently recognised for leading with empathy at an all team meeting, the feedback reflects the respect “Borgie” has earned across teams.
He is also part of a broader family connection within the organisation, with other family members contributing to the business.
His approach remains consistent. Support people, focus on outcomes, and deliver for the community.
