Greater Western Water (GWW) has delivered 3,552 trees to 89 schools in partnership with the Victorian Government, through the More Trees for a Cooler Greener West program, just in time for National Trees for Schools Day.
This week sees school communities all over Melbourne’s west getting together to plant the tube stock delivered to them as part of the Trees for Schools program.

The program provides local primary and secondary schools tube stock of native trees, along with stakes and guards to help them establish and grow. It aims to increase tree canopy cover and create more green spaces across Melbourne's west.
Greater Western Water’s General Manager of Strategy and Partnerships Kessia Thomson said the interest in this year’s Trees for Schools program was inspiring, with so many schools in our community eager to create a greener future for the region.
“More schools applied to receive trees through the Trees for Schools program in 2025 than ever before. It’s wonderful to see that students in our service region are passionate about making a positive change in their community.”
“Planting new trees will help boost tree canopy cover in Melbourne’s west. This will improve air quality, provide urban cooling and provide critical habitats for local birds and wildlife – which is particularly important while we face drying conditions.”
Schools in Melbourne’s west who participate in the program are contributing to increasing tree canopy cover and, importantly, raising awareness of the benefits of green spaces in our communities.
