Local water supplies returning following temporary Melbourne water connection
30 October 2026
Customers in parts of the Macedon Ranges and Moorabool regions are returning to their usual local drinking water supplies following a temporary connection to Melbourne's water supply network.
Greater Western Water temporarily switched customers supplied by the Rosslynne and Merrimu Water Treatment Plants to Melbourne's water supply network in May 2006, while carrying out maintenance activities and helping protect local water storages during dry conditions.
Customers supplied by the Merrimu and Rosslynne Water Treatment Plant have now returned to their usual local water supply.
What customers might notice
As water supplies return to local sources, some customers may notice a slight change in the taste or smell of their drinking water.
This is a normal result of switching between water sources and reflects the different treatment processes used for Melbourne's water supply compared to local water sources.
While the taste may vary, customers can be confident their drinking water remains safe, high quality and continues to meet all Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.
Supporting long-term water security
We use a range of water sources across our network to meet the needs of our growing region. This ensures a reliable water supply during maintenance, dry conditions or when demand is high.
Returning customers to their local water source allows normal operations to resume while continuing to manage local water resources sustainably.
No action is required from customers.
We thank the community for its understanding and cooperation throughout this period.
