Residents in Greater Western Water's service area have more opportunities to ditch bottled water and choose tap water this summer thanks to the installation of five new drinking fountains in 2025.
The new Choose Tap fountains have been welcome additions to popular parks and walking tracks in Harkness, Diggers Rest, Hoppers Crossing, Strathmore and Romsey.
Greater Western Water Acting General Manager Strategy and Partnerships Suzanne Knight said increased access to top quality water in public places encouraged refills, rather than single use plastic bottles.
"We're pleased to have partnered with local councils to install these new fountains in 2025, which are already delivering positive outcomes for communities as well as the environment.
"If people can easily find free, clean tap water in places where they might find themselves feeling thirsty, all the while reducing plastic consumption and environmental harm, that's a win-win for everyone."
Greater Western Water worked with partners including Melton City Council, Wyndham City Council, Moonee Ponds City Council and Macedon Ranges Shire Council to install the fountains.
Among the new Choose Tap fountains, one installed in Strathmore’s Chain of Ponds park features panel artwork by Wurundjeri, Dja Dja Wurrung and Ngurai Illum Wurrung artist Ky-ya Nicholson-Ward.
The five fountains contribute to a total of more than 40 Choose Tap fountains installed across Greater Western Water's service area, keeping the community hydrated all over Melbourne's west.
The five new locations are:
Torrance Drive Reserve, Harkness
Norm Raven Reserve, Diggers Rest
34 Dunlop Road, Hoppers Crossing (as part of the Greening the Pipeline initiative along the Federation trail bike path)
Brosnan Crescent, Strathmore (as part of the Chain of Ponds initiative)
Lions Park Reserve, Romsey
