Greater Western Water’s Adam Heaton named Young Water Professional of the Year
9 October 2026
Greater Western Water’s Developer Relationship and Reporting Lead Adam Heaton has been named Young Water Professional of the Year at the 2026 Victorian Water Awards.
The award recognises Adam’s leadership in bringing people together to solve complex servicing challenges.
In his role within GWW’s Asset Planning and Delivery team, Adam works with developers, industry, government and water sector colleagues to support sustainable growth across Melbourne’s west.
His work brings together stakeholder engagement, infrastructure planning and liveability outcomes for communities. More recently, he has focused on the challenges and opportunities presented by data centres and other large water users.
This has included coordinating the sector’s response with the State Government on data centre growth.
Adam’s broader industry contribution includes chairing the Association of Land Development Engineers’ Young Engineers in Land Development Committee and strengthening collaboration across development services professionals through institutions such as the Institute of Water Administration (IWA).
Adam said winning the award was a proud and personally meaningful achievement.
“This award acknowledges the colleagues, mentors and industry partners who have supported and challenged me along the way,” he said.
“I’ve been blown away by the support from colleagues across the business and am so thankful to everyone who has taken the time to reach out and congratulate me.”
“Much of what we achieve in water depends on people working together, and I see this recognition as reflecting that collective effort. It strengthens my commitment to keep contributing to a sector that makes a lasting difference to our communities.”
GWW’s General Manager of Asset Planning and Delivery, Ian Burton, congratulated Adam on the award.
“Adam has demonstrated outstanding leadership in bringing people together to solve complex servicing challenges and build strong partnerships across the water sector,” he said.
“His collaborative approach, ability to connect stakeholders and commitment to positive outcomes have made a significant contribution to Greater Western Water, our industry and the communities we serve.”
“He also has a strong ability to see the bigger picture and understand how today’s decisions will shape the future of our region, industry and customers.”
Adam’s award formed part of a successful night for GWW, which also contributed to two collaborative initiatives recognised at the Victorian Water Awards.
These included Calming the Water Network with AI/ML, which received the Infrastructure Project Innovation Excellence Award (Metro), and Gems in STEM, which won the Organisational Excellence Award.
GWW’s Future State Maintenance Delivery Model was also recognised as a finalist in the Organisational Excellence category.
The awards were presented at the Australian Water Association’s Victorian Water Awards, held at Melbourne Museum on Thursday 8 October. The awards recognise excellence, innovation and outstanding achievement across Victoria's water industry.
GWW was recognised through two collaborative award-winning initiatives at the 2026 Victorian Water Awards.
Infrastructure Project Innovation Award (METRO)
VicWater, Greater Western Water, South East Water, Yarra Valley Water, Central Highlands Water and other contributing organisations – Calming the Water Network with AI/ML.
Pressure transients (“water hammer”) caused by abruptly operating valves and pumps are widely recognised as a dominant driver of pipe breaks and material fatigue in the water network. VicWater’s Intelligent Water Networks (IWN) program has been working with Transient Detect, an Adelaide start-up, and a collaboration of Victorian water authorities to use AI/ML to solve this wicked challenge and calm the network.
Organisational Excellence Award
CMP Consulting Group, Melbourne Water, South East Water, Greater Western Water, Yarra Valley Water, Barwon Water, Westernport Water and Engineers Australia – The Pipeline Before the Pipeline: Securing Australia's Water Future Through Gems in STEM.
Gems in STEM is transforming the future of the Australian water sector by inspiring the next generation of engineers, scientists and innovators. Through education, advocacy and collaboration, CMP and its industry partners have reached nearly 7,000 students, breaking down barriers, challenging stereotypes and building a more diverse and sustainable workforce.
