Major upgrade to future-proof inner city water supply

28 July 2022

A major upgrade to renew 3.8km of water mains to help future-proof water supply for Carlton, North Melbourne and the CBD is set to begin next week.

Greater Western Water (GWW) is investing $16.1 million to replace ageing water mains from North Melbourne to Carlton, along Victoria Street, as well as parts of Rathdowne Street and Howard Street.

GWW General Manager, Growth and Infrastructure, Amanda Smith said the current water main network was around 140 years old and nearing the end of its service life.

“The new water mains will be larger than the existing network and will ensure a clean and reliable water supply, extra capacity for a growing population and protection against water loss and leaks,” she said.

“These upgrades are vital to support Melbourne’s ongoing growth and will secure water supply for the area for decades to come.”

GWW has appointed Jaydo Construction to deliver the major upgrade.

“Jaydo has a long-standing history of delivering major water infrastructure construction projects while minimising disturbance to local communities and businesses, which is a high priority of ours,” she said.

“We will continue to work with key stakeholders including City of Melbourne, Yarra Trams and the Department of Transport to ensure those who may be impacted are kept up-to-date and notified of any upcoming works.”

“We will also have a site office open at Howard Street during business hours and we invite community members to drop in and chat to the team about the upgrade.”

Ms Smith said 55 jobs would be created as part of the upgrade, which is expected to take around 15 months to complete.
