Gisborne Recycled Water Plant upgrade

Project overview

We’re investing over $55 million in a major project to upgrade the Gisborne Recycled Water Plant (RWP), located at Haywood Drive in Gisborne.

The upgrade involves building a new treatment facility at the existing site to increase the capacity and includes the installation of new energy-efficient technology.

Construction of the plant was completed in late 2025. We’re currently testing the quality of the recycled water produced by the plant to ensure it meets our high standards.

Greater Western Water (GWW) is taking part in an innovative trial to see if a mix of recycled materials can be used to backfill trenches on busy roads, helping to reduce landfill waste and promote a more sustainable future.
